A Portland woman will spend more than five years behind bars for dealing heroin with her children in the car.
Maria Gonzalez-Torres, 31, was sentenced Wednesday by a U.S. District judge. She was arrested, along with her husband Jose Lizarraras-Chacon, in November 2011.
Investigators said she would take phone call orders from customers from heroin and then accompany her husband to make deliveries of the drug throughout the metro area, often accompanied by their children.
Police arranged a controlled purchase on Nov. 29, 2011 from the duo. Officers said Gonzalez-Torres answered the call, made the deal and indicated they would make the delivery shortly.
Surveillance officers observed Lizarraras-Chacon leave their apartment carrying a baby in a car seat to one of the family's vehicles. Gonzalez-Torres followed along with two other children, ages 4 and 7 years old.
Officers stopped the car as it headed toward the agreed-upon delivery location.
A female officer conducted a pat-down search of Gonzalez-Torres and found five ounces of heroin concealed in her bra. There was also $300 in a diaper bag.
Police searched the family's apartment at 179th and Burnside and seized more than $84,000 in cash stashed all over the home.
Police said they also found 470 grams of heroin hidden in a diaper container. A .45 caliber semiautomatic gun was also located in a hall closet.
Gonzalez-Torres admitted she had not held legitimate employment for four years and was receiving $1,100 per month in public benefits, according to the Department of Justice.
Lizarraras previously pleaded guilty in the case and is set to be sentenced Feb. 25.
