The Lincoln County School District is starting its winter break one day early.
Superintendent Tom Rinearson said classes are canceled Friday, one day earlier than previously scheduled for the coastal community.
Rinearson said a combination of reasons prompted the decision.
He said the potential for inclement weather conditions could make driving hazardous in the area. However, he also cited the heightened level of concern about school security both locally and nationally after the Connecticut school shooting.
Rinearson also added there are a high number of student absences right before a holiday.
"The holidays are a high-stress time anyway, and the last day of school is usually not a good quality learning day," he said in a statement. "I ask for everyone's understanding, and wish them a safe, happy holiday."
