LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

A man shot and killed his uncle during an argument at their apartment complex late Friday night, according to the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators charged 48-year-old Scott W. Humphreys with murder. He's accused of fatally shooting his uncle, 62-year-old David A. "Lonnie" Peterson, in the abdomen.

Neighbors said the men were fighting inside Peterson's apartment at the Executive West Apartments located at 4511 Ocean Beach Hwy. around 10 p.m. Friday.

"We heard a big bang," said Ron Nelson, who lives a few apartments down. He said Humphreys also lives at the apartment complex and was close with Peterson. Nelson said the men were fighting over a hat and a cell phone.

"Lonnie was a great guy," said apartment manager Allen Pace. "He had a big heart. He would go out of his way for anybody and he'd give you his last dime."

Peterson was rushed to the hospital where he died.

Humphreys was taken into custody at the scene and booked in the Cowlitz County Jail. He is being held without bail pending a court hearing on a charge of second-degree murder.

Investigators said the gun used in the shooting belonged to Peterson.
