Stolen puppy returned to family in 'Best Christmas ever'

A puppy stolen from the Oregon Humane Society celebrated Christmas Day with the family that was originally trying to adopt him.

The pooch, John, was recovered Monday night after being stolen over the weekend.

According to the Oregon Humane Society, Gresham Police received an anonymous tip and found the Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix at a home.

A $500 reward had been offered for information leading to the recovery of the puppy after it was stolen Saturday. Somebody walked out of the shelter with the dog just as the family was getting ready to adopt the canine.

Susan Harmon, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society, said publicity over the theft played a role in the return of the pet.

"Folks in Oregon care deeply about pets. The social media pressure was outstanding. When they realized they had a hot puppy, they were eager to return it to the shelter,"  said Sharon Harmon, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society.

Harmon said it was an uneventful recovery, and that the puppy took a bath and then headed to his new home. The family adopting John said it was an unexpected Christmas gift.

"It was very exciting. I think Lauren said it the best when we got the phone call last night. She said, 'Best Christmas ever.' We were excited to get the phone call, and obviously nervous with all the cameras," said Mike Belzer, whose family adopted the dog. "(We) just want to take our puppy and go home and get on with our Christmas."

Gresham police are still investigating the case, but no arrests have been made.
