PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
A woman who had been visiting her family in Portland suddenly had to fight for her life on a Greyhound bus when another passenger attacked her.
Dominique Brown and her 3-year-old daughter boarded the Greyhound bus in Portland on Christmas Eve to head home to Stockton, CA. A few hours into the trip, a passenger, later identified by police as Charles Ripley, attacked them, Brown said.
"I'm still in shock. It happened so fast. I'm just happy my baby is OK. He could have stabbed her in her head," Brown said.
When Brown first sat down next to the man, he appeared to be understanding and patient with Brown's daughter.
"He was nice. He was like, 'It's fine, just let her kick her feet up, don't mind me, everything's fine.' He was a nice dude," Brown said.
A few hours into the trip, however, it started to snow, and Ripley became agitated and threatening, Brown said.
"I thought he was freaking out from the snow and then he became quiet for two minutes and jumped on me. 'I'm gonna kill you,' and all this, it was crazy," Brown said.
Another man sitting nearby came to Brown's defense. Police said Ripley stabbed Brown and the passenger during the struggle.
"He stabbed me on the left side of my stomach, in my back; he stabbed me in between my thumb and my index finger," she said.
Brown's 3-year-old daughter was not injured in the attack.
Other passengers detained Ripley until California Highway Patrol officers arrived to take him into custody.
Brown said she makes the trip from Stockton to Portland to visit her family every few months, but now plans to find a new way to get to Portland.
"I'm never going to ride the bus again. It's not safe. I can never step foot on the bus again," she said.
A spokeswoman for Greyhound said passengers are selected randomly for security checks on a regular basis at the major terminals. She said incidents like the one that happened on the bus from Portland to Stockton are extremely rare.
