Dog rescued from cliff along Clackamas River

Posted: Updated:

A dog is safe at home after falling over the side of a cliff along the Clackamas River.

Rescuers with Clackamas fire crews were called at 5 p.m. Wednesday evening after the dog's owner located him.

The American pit bull named Chico had gone missing several days earlier. When the owner found him, Chico was 15 to 20 feet down a hillside and unable to be reached on foot. Shortly after being found, Chico slid even farther down the hillside.

Crews used ropes to lower a rescuer over the embankment and escorted the dog to a waiting rescue boat. Chico was taken to Riverside Park where he was reunited with his owner. He was tired, but otherwise uninjured.

Clackamas Fire would like to remind people to call 911 in cases like this if you are unable to safely reach your pet. Often times, attempting to rescue your animal in an unsafe situation leads to people being injured and in need of rescue themselves.
