Electric wheelchair blamed for apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters were called out to an apartment fire early Thursday morning started by an electric wheelchair.

It happened at 12:30 a.m. at the Rolling Green Apartments, 2206 S.E. 44th Ave., Hillsboro.

Firefighters said the building's automatic sprinkler system put out the fire. Crews began checking each of the apartments to determine if anyone was hurt.

The person living in the apartment where the fire started was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and then taken to the hospital for further treatment.

Six of the apartments on the first and second floors were damaged by water from the sprinklers. A local care home provided shelter overnight for people living in those apartments.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by an electric wheelchair. There is not yet a property damage estimate.
