Local football player attacked in California returns to Vancouver

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Two months after a stranger punched Tyler Burton so hard he almost died, the Shasta College running back has returned to Vancouver.

Burton has been recovering in a hospital in Northern California after he was knocked to the ground Halloween weekend at a costume event in Chico. Burton hit his head on the pavement so hard doctors thought he might not survive, much less fully recover.

"I really believed he was going to die," said Burton's mother, Kimberly Hash, at a press conference Thursday, "but they put the skullcap back on and he kept doing better. It was awesome."

Just a month after doctors told Hash her son's condition was hopeless, Burton is speaking in full sentences and walking with assistance.

"He stood for the first time yesterday for 15, 20 seconds, with three therapists around him," said Burton's stepdad Roddy Hash.

Burton will undergo up to six hours of rehabilitation a day at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver.

More than 14,000 people have "liked" the Pray for Tyler Burton Facebook page.

The family is hosting a fundraiser Monday, Jan. 7 at the Cascade Park Burgerville from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
