Portland police honored Sunday an officer who is now paralyzed after a training accident last month.
Police Chief Mike Reese presented Officer Paul Meyer with his 20-year service pin Sunday afternoon in a ceremony at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in north Portland.
In November, a tree fell on Meyer during ATV training, leaving him paralyzed.
Meyer said the support he has received since the accident has been phenomenal.
"It's amazing. I feel so fortunate to have survived this thing and be who I am still, and to have this support is what keeps us going," he said. "It keeps me going every day, it keeps the family going. It helps my wife deal with what all this has brought on as well, just trying to take care of a house with two boys."
Even though doctors don't expect Meyer will be able to walk again, he won't be leaving the police force anytime soon.
Reese told Meyer his job with the Portland Police Bureau is secure.
"The word 'police family' means more to me now than it has ever meant," he said.
An account has been set up at Advantis Credit Union to make contributions to Meyer's family under the name Officer Paul Meyer Fund.
