PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
The oldest Montessori school in the Pacific Northwest is celebrating its 50th anniversary and a new name.
Providence Montessori School will now be known as the Portland Montessori School.
Staff, students and parents gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday to unveil the new name and new sign.
The school was run by Providence Health and Services, but transitioned to an independent, nonprofit school on Jan. 1.
The school will now be run by an independent executive board and a parent advisory board.
Portland Montessori School offers primary and elementary programs that build on a rich history of learning, friendship and community.
The Portland Montessori School is located on Northeast Couch Street.
