PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

U.S. marshals arrested a suspect Thursday in the murder of a southwest Portland woman.

Jaime Larson, 33, was found dead on Christmas night in her apartment on Southwest Park Avenue.

Investigators said they identified 37-year-old Michael Kirkland as a suspect through forensic evidence found at the crime scene. Portland police worked with the state crime lab to examine the evidence.

Officers arrested Kirkland on Thursday at 1212 Southwest Clay St. in connection with Larson's murder.

Kirkland was booked in Multnomah County Jail. On Friday, he was arraigned on three counts of aggravated murder. Court documents suggest he also committed the crimes of burglary, rape and sodomy.

Records obtained by FOX 12 show Kirkland has a criminal history, including a conviction of felony assault in 2004 and a conviction of misdemeanor assault in 2002. At this point, investigators say it's unclear if he knew Larson.

"I was kind of surprised because I actually knew Michael and didn't think he was the type of guy to do something like that," said David Wickstrom, Kirkland's neighbor.

Wickstrom said he first met Kirkland when they were both homeless and receiving services from a housing transition program. He said Kirkland was recently working for a rail car manufacturer.

News of Kirkland's arrest came just a few hours after Larson's family and friends gathered at a funeral home in Sellwood to honor and remember her.

Larson's brother said his sister was attending school and had a bright future.

"She had a great smile. She was a wonderful person, and she really will be missed," Justin Larson said.

Detectives would like to hear from anyone who has information about Larson's murder or any information about Kirkland.
