PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Beaverton police arrested a 26-year-old man Thursday after the death of his 7-week-old son.

Officers responded to a report of a child not breathing at the King's Court Apartments on Estuary Drive around noon Wednesday.

They spoke with the infant's parents, 26-year-old Robert Myers and 27-year-old Stephanie Baker, and Myers initially told them he had accidentally fallen asleep on the sofa next to his young son.

When Myers awoke, he found the child unresponsive and called 911, police said.

The infant, Aden Myers, was taken to a hospital and placed on life support, but he was taken off life support on Thursday evening.

"It's just a shock and we're not really sure of everything. Robert is upset but bless his soul he told truth, like I said he's not really sure what happened it's just stress," said Daniel Myers, Robert's father.

Detectives responded to the hospital and interviewed Myers and Baker. Further investigation led them to interview Myers again the following day.

During that interview, statements made by Myers led police to arrest him on a charge of murder in connection with the death of his child.

"After that interview the detective determined the injuries the child sustained earlier in the day, were not accidental," said Beaverton Police Chief Geoff Spalding.

Police said staff at Doernbecher Hospital at OHSU found a broken bone in the baby's chest that appeared to be in the healing process.

"Robert has accepted his responsibility and after 12 hours this was hard but he's taken responsibility for this and he's broken up about it," said Daniel Myers.

An autopsy for baby Aden is scheduled for Saturday and police hope it will reveal more

Myers made his first court appearance Friday afternoon. His next court date is set for Jan. 9.
