VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

The mother of a boy found crying and wandering on a street in Vancouver will not face charges.

Police put out a call to find the child's parents after he was found near Washington Elementary School on South Street around 1 p.m. Thursday.

The 3-year-old was wearing a shirt, jeans over a diaper and no shoes.

Officers knocked on doors in a five-block radius of the school and reached out to neighbors through reverse 911 calls.

But police were not able to locate the child's guardians.

Around 4:15 p.m., police said a woman called 911 in a panic to say her son was missing. Officers interviewed the woman and she said the boy frequently takes naps and she thought that was the case this time around.

A relative eventually called her to say the found boy might be her son and that's when she realized he was missing, according to police.

The boy was turned over to state child protective services workers who said they found no wrongdoing and planned to take him back home to his mother Friday.

Vancouver police said they don't plan to file any charges.
