YACOLT, WA (KPTV) -

A Yacolt man will spend 35 years behind bars for shooting his ex-girlfriend in the head after she tried to break up with him.

Michael Boswell was sentenced to 35 years in prison Friday, with credit for more than one year already served, after being found guilty of attempted murder. The jury delivered that verdict last November.

He was arrested in November 2011. Investigators said he was despondent over his relationship ending with the victim and shot her with a .22-caliber revolver while she slept in their home.

The woman drove herself to the hospital and survived the shooting.

Police responded to the home on Northeast Lucia Falls Road in Yacolt and a SWAT standoff that lasted for hours finally ended when Boswell turned himself in.
