An extravagant drink: Salem man purchases $27,000 bottle of Scotch

Posted: Updated:

What's the most you've ever paid for a bottle of alcohol?

$50, $100?

Whatever the figure, odds are it's still substantially less than what Lyle Shellenberg handed over for a bottle of Scotch whiskey at a liquor store Friday.

The retired Salem businessman and his wife made a special trip to Hillsdale Liquor off Capitol Highway to make one extravagant purchase.

Shellenberg purchased a 50-year-old bottle of Glenfiddich Scotch whisky at a price of $27,000.

"My grandfather, who is originally from Scotland, he was a Scotch drinker and his favorite was Glenfiddich," Shellenberg said.

Shellenberg said he even toured the distillery with his grandfather 40 years ago and has been a loyal customer ever since.

But $27,000 for a bottle of Scotch?

"I could have spent money on a sports car or something else," he said. "I just happened to choose that I like Glenfiddich Scotch and this was interesting to me, it was different, it's not something somebody down the street or someone else in Oregon has."

Shellenberg is one of only six people in the country to purchase one of the 50 such bottles released worldwide each year.

The handcrafted bottle arrived at the liquor store in a locked leather case.

"There's a knot that's tied by a world champion fly fisherman," said Mitch Bechard, Glenfiddich ambassador for western U.S. "And his job is to tie knots and he does this for us by hand for each bottle."

This isn't just some trophy bottle for Shellenberg either. He plans to drink every drop of that $27,000 bottle of Scotch.

He doesn't have any set plan to crack it open yet, however. Instead, he said he'll likely do it sometime in the next year as a special event with his family.

"For a while, we'll look at it and admire it and it's good for show and tell," he said. "But then there comes a time when, you know, the seal's going to be broken and opened because I just have to know what it tastes like."
