Lost dog reunited with owner after North Portland crash

Posted: Updated:

A Vancouver woman has been reunited with her lost dog Rico after a suspected drunk driver crashed into her parked car on North Williams Avenue in Portland.

Nicole Weir's car was totaled while she was inside a nearby restaurant Saturday night. Her 6-year-old Terrier mix was inside her Toyota when a speeding car slammed into the Yaris, pinning it against a telephone pole.

Rico the dog managed to escape the wreckage but ran away.

Weir spent Sunday posting fliers near Williams and Shaver streets. Friends began sharing a digital flier on Facebook to get the word out about the missing dog.

By Sunday evening, dozens were on the search, and hundreds more had seen the flier.

"The good news is the tips that we've gotten, they say he's like running really fast and that they couldn't catch him," Weir said. "Hopefully that means he wasn't badly injured in the accident."

Rico was wearing a collar with Weir's name and phone number. He is also microchipped.

That identification paid off Monday morning, when a homeowner near the University of Portland found Rico wandering in the front yard. The homeowner contacted Weir so she could pick up her dog.

The driver of the car that crashed into Weir's Yaris was taken to the hospital along with a passenger. As of Sunday, a spokesman from the Portland Police Bureau could not confirm whether the driver had been cited but said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
