Marysville School reopens three years after fire

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Classes will resume at Marysville School in southeast Portland on Monday for the first time since a devastating fire ripped through the school more than three years ago.

The fire heavily damaged the then 87-year-old school back in November 2009.

Investigators determined that the fire started in the Discovery Zone, which used to be the girls' gym.

Most of the east classrooms were vacant at the time for the first lunch period. Everyone got out safely.

Investigators never determined how the fire started, but they did rule out the building's electrical system as a source.

Staff and students were relocated to Rose City Park after the fire. That's where they've had classes ever since.

As part of the reopening, staff and students will get to use a new media center, science lab and technology lab.
