Is a cat thief on the loose in St. Johns?

Posted: Updated:

Cat owners in St. Johns are on high alert after a reported cat theft and another report of a man trying to lure a cat from a yard.

A person cat-sitting for a friend saw a man grab a Siamese cat named Bubbles by his tail from his yard on North Kellogg Street near North St. Johns Avenue. The man put the animal in his car and drove away around 8 a.m. on Nov. 15.

The man was wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt and drove a white, four-door car.

On Dec. 23, police received a report of a man trying to lure a cat on North Ivanhoe Street.

"The neighbor saw the man walk into my yard, try to lure my cat to him," said Darlene, who asked only her first named be used. "But Beezer didn't go to him. So the man drove away. It's just frightening, it's just scary."

That neighbor told police the man was wearing dark clothes and a hat. He was driving a white, four-door, 2000-2004 Cadillac Deville with tinted windows. One of the car's headlights may have been out.

Residents have told the area's district officer other cats have gone missing, but only two reports filed with police have linked a person to cat theft.
