Vancouver couple stuck after bicycle stolen

It was the kind of possession Harley Forbes knew to keep safe - a 1970s era tandem Peugeot bicycle. It's a classic model worth hundreds of dollars but bought on the cheap and fixed up just for Forbes and his wife, Courtney.

The bike was tucked away on the front porch they share with Courtney Forbes' mother, Kimberlee Turner, on V Street in Vancouver.

"It has a horn and two bells - a bell on the front and a bell on the back," Turner said.

Even though it was hidden behind a ledge and chained to a brick, the family was worried the bike would be stolen. On the front porch they hung a sign, "Smile, you're on camera thieves."

But early Monday morning, the thieves didn't care. Nearby surveillance video shows two men bicycling away from Turner's house - one of the men on a tandem bicycle.

"I was absolutely crushed for my daughter and son-in-law," Turner said.

The Forbes are developmentally disabled. The couple can't drive, but the bicycle allowed them to run errands, go shopping and attend Courtney Forbes' doctor's appointments.

"I think it not only gave them a sense of independence which they would have otherwise, it made them feel good," Turner said.

That independence is gone until the couple gets their wheels back.
