Dogs alert Oak Grove family about carport & house fire

Posted: Updated:

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a carport then spread to a home in the Oak Grove area of Clackamas County.

The fire broke out just before 11 p.m. Monday at a home near Southeast Laurel Street and Southeast Linden Lane.

The homeowner told FOX 12 that she let her dog, Colby, out for the night and got ready for bed.

At around 11 p.m., she heard Colby scratching at the door and knew that something was wrong, she said. She got up, went through the living room, and saw flames through the kitchen window, she added. She screamed for her husband.

"I've lived in this house for 16, 17 years and have never had any issues or anything," the woman said. "We got ready for bed. Our normal routine. So nothing was out of the ordinary at all."

The family got out safely, but one of their dogs did not survive. The homeowner told FOX 12 she believes he got freaked out and went back into the bedroom.

Firefighters got the fire out within about 50 minutes, they said.

There was a live power line on the ground when firefighters arrived, they said. They were able to work around it until power crews came and shut the power off.

There's no word on how the fire started.
