Nonprofit helps victims of sex trafficking and prostitution

Tucked away in Tualatin is an old farmhouse with a story of restoration and transformation.

Kathy Towne remodeled it two years ago with the vision of turning it into the home of Divine Threads - a nonprofit aimed at helping women who are victims of sex trafficking and prostitution.

"It's an area where a lot of healing and conversation happen," she said.

Today with the remodel complete, women like 21-year-old Alexa Garris can begin their own transformations, both inside and out.

"I struggled with prostitution and drug use and overall just being lost," Garris said.

Garris started drug use at just 11 and was in abusive relationships before landing into prostitution.

"I hated myself so much, I was just so angry," she said.

That all changed the day she walked through the doors of Divine Threads.

Towne and her volunteers help clients like Garris with complete makeovers including hair, makeup and clothes.

Trained professionals teach women how to put together their resumes and aid with their job search.

"It's the first steps sometimes in making a girl feel like, OK I do have something to offer, I have a place," Towne explained.

Each client goes home with free outfits, makeup and more importantly a new outlook on life.

After her makeover, Garris said, "It feels good to feel beautiful for good reasons. I have a heart for other people and other women struggling and I just want to share what I received with them."

It all goes back to Towne's vision two years ago.

In the remodeling process, she had purposely kept many of the original features of the house, like the scuffed hardwood floors.

She said they're a part of the building's history and though may at first appear flawed, are now part of a beautiful transformation.
