The Pacific University College of Optometry is teaming up with Governor John Kitzhaber to offer free eye exams in Portland and Cornelius.
The governor declared Jan. 14 and 15 Eye on Diabetes Days in Oregon.
Organizers said the "campaign focuses on increasing the awareness and understanding of the connection between eye care and a person's general health."
It "also highlights the important role eye doctors play in the detection and treatment of diabetes. An eye exam provides an opportunity for early detection of a variety of diseases such as diabetes, which are most treatable during early stages," organizers said.
Students with mobile treatment centers will offer free eye exams, glasses and health risk assessments from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
The locations are:
Monday, Jan. 14
1151 North Adair
Cornelius, OR 97113
Tuesday, Jan. 15
8800 SE 80th Ave.
Portland, OR 97206
Organizers say doctors have diagnosed over 186,000 adults with diabetes in Oregon, and those numbers on the rise.
