State police are continuing to investigate a crash on Interstate 5 that led to the death of an 8-year-old boy and serious injuries to his 13-year-old brother.
Troopers said a 2000 Dodge Durango with six people inside was heading north on I-5 in the Albany area when the driver, for an unknown reason, crashed into the center median of the freeway.
The SUV rolled several times before coming to rest on its side in the southbound lanes.
Police said 8-year-old Yonic Guzman-Arango was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. His 13-year-old brother, Mateo Guzman, was rushed by ambulance to Albany General Hospital to be treated for serious injuries, and then transferred to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.
A 53-year-old male driver, Willevaldo Guzman-Kruz, and his 37-year-old wife, Evangelica Guzman-Arango, were injured in the wreck but did not require treatment at the hospital. Two other children in the SUV also were not transported.
A tire malfunction may have played a role in the crash, but state police are still investigating. They're also looking into whether the victim wore a seat belt. All of the survivors were wearing seat belts.
Southbound lanes of I-5 were blocked for about three hours because of the crash.
