PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales has joined a coalition of mayors in support of new gun control laws.

The mayor says he's angry about gun laws in this country and he's calling on leaders in Washington to take action.

In a press conference Monday, Hales talked about joining the "Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition."

He is one of 800 mayors across the country who are calling on the president to make common sense changes.

The group is proposing a three-point plan to end gun violence.

They want to require a criminal background check for all gun sales, ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and make gun trafficking a federal crime.

Hales said he is also calling on the Oregon legislature to make this a priority.
