Firefighters said drivers should be extra cautious in rural areas of Clackamas and Washington counties Tuesday morning.

The roadway on Ladd Hill Road south of Sherwood was "a sheet of ice" at 9 a.m., firefighters said, and ice was also making driving tricky in other high-elevation spots around the area.

Germantown Road is closed from Skyline Boulevard to Highway 30 as a result of the icy conditions.

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue officials said drivers needing to travel on high-elevation, rural roads should use traction devices or wait at home until temperatures warm up.

Portland transportation officials urged drivers to be cautious, slow down, allow three times the normal distance to brake and stop safely, use headlights and share the road responsibly.

On Monday night, city transportation crews applied anti-icing chemical on bridges, overpasses, steep hills and known trouble spots to help prevent ice from forming. But when temperatures dip below 27 degrees, the chemical has limited effect.
