Beaverton police are searching for leads in a hit-and-run crash that killed an 18-year-old Tuesday night.
A woman discovered the body of Harley Rocher near Southwest Laurelwood Avenue, near Southwest Homewood Street, just before 8 p.m. Investigators say he was hit sometime earlier that evening.
Rocher's family is pleading for the driver, or anyone with information, to come forward.
"I want them to understand that Harley was the kind of person who would do the right thing," said his mother, Tammi Beers. "He was the kind of person who would take responsibility. They owe him that."
Beers described her son as respectful, mellow and hard-working.
"He was just the kind of kid you dream of having," she said.
Rocher was a technician at America's Tire in Beaverton. Beers said he took public transportation to and from work. Part of his route home involved walking on Southwest Laurelwood Avenue.
There are no streetlights on this stretch of Laurelwood Avenue, which connects Southwest Scholls Ferry Road and Southwest Beaverton Hillsdale Highway.
Residents say drivers often speed and use the street as a shortcut between the larger roads. In addition, there are no sidewalks and no street lights.
"I don't see any way that they could not known that they hit something. If the sound I heard was actually a car hitting a person, there was no way you would have known," said Kacey Farrens James, who lives near the crash scene.
Farrens James said she heard a loud crashing noise between 7 and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, but did not see anything when she checked outside. It was very dark at the time, she said.
"It sounded like a car crash," she said. "It sounded like metal and metal. So that's what we were looking for."
Beers spoke with her son on the phone Tuesday. She had dialed his phone number on accident and he was returning her call.
"Our conversation was pretty short. I could tell he was walking. He was planning on coming Saturday for dinner. I was going to make his favorite and he was excited about that. And it as right before they said he got hit," she said.
"I'm really blessed to have had that glitch, have that conversation with him."
Rocher left a good impression with teachers at Merlo Station High School, where he attended a program for transitional students.
"Harley came with a game plan he walked into a room. Listen. This is what I have," said Janine Weir, one of his teachers.
She met with Rocher to follow up last fall and was pleased with his progress. He had completed his GED. "He was just so happy and so uplifted about life."
Beaverton police say the vehicle involved in the crash will have significant damage. If you have information, call Beaverton police at 503-629-0111.
Threadgill Memorial in Beaverton is handling memorial services and is accepting donations in the name of Harley Rocher. They can be reached at 503- 526-3952.
