Landslide repairs on SR 501 in Ridgefield

Posted: Updated:
RIDGEFIELD, WA (KPTV) -

Repair work is under way on State Route 501 in Ridgefield after a landslide wiped out a hillside next to the highway.

Unusually heavy rains in November and December saturated the soil next to the highway and led to the landslide on Dec. 30 near Smythe Road.

The Washington State Department of Transportation reduced the speed limit to 20 mph between Ridgefield and Smythe Road. Crews closed the eastbound lane Jan. 9 and installed a temporary traffic signal to direct drivers past the slide area.

Those measures will remain in place until repairs are complete.

Contractor crews working with WSDOT will excavate loose soil and debris, stabilize the hillside below the highway and repair cracked pavement.

Crews will work during daylight hours seven days a week. The work is expected to be finished by mid-February.

Repairs are being funded through state highway maintenance and preservation funds and are estimated at $500,000.
