Ridgefield School District hires armed guards

Posted: Updated:

Armed security guards have shown up at one local school district in Washington.

Administrators at Ridgefield School District have implemented a new plan that will mean security guards will soon be roaming the four schools.

The school district hired Phoenix Protective Corporation, a private security company to patrol the schools and protect all 2,200 students in the district.

There will be at least two armed guards patrolling the schools during school hours.

The guards started on Wednesday as they planned out their patrols as they travel throughout the day between each of the schools.

One of the reasons administrators wanted to add more security was a large open courtyard between four buildings at the high school.

The money to pay for the guards comes from district funds that cost a total of $39,000.

Security officers have been used in the past at Ridgefield but funding ran out.

This time the issue came up after the Newtown, CT school shooting.

The guards will not only help keep campuses safe, they will help with much more.

"They will patrol each one of the campuses and provide assistance to administrators to our schools so in an event principal wants to search lockers, the security guards can help the principal search those lockers," said Eric Jacobson, communications officer with the Ridgefield School District.

The district has also implemented new security guidelines for people visiting the schools, requiring them to check in with identification so they know exactly who is on campus and when.

Those guards will be in place between now and the end of the school year.
