PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
The Oregon Department of Transportation is bringing out the big guns to take down an urban menace.
Crews began using two cannons to scare away starlings from the Interstate Bridge today. The migrating birds like to roost on the bridge in the winter, but their droppings create a potential health hazard.
Their numbers reach into the thousands as droppings coat the bridge, catwalks, roadway, vehicles, and even pedestrians
The cannons won't be used every day; however, you can expect to hear them through mid-March.
