Man who fired gun to celebrate New Year's gets probation

Posted: Updated:

A man who fired his gun to celebrate New Year's Eve and ended up grazing a young boy was sentenced in court Thursday.

Jaime Moya will face three years formal probation and no prison time.

A jury found Moya guilty on charges of unlawful discharge of a weapon and reckless endangering earlier this month.

He was arrested in early 2012 after police said he admitted firing a gun in the direction of homes near Yew Court in Forest Grove on New Year's Eve 2011.

He told investigators he was celebrating the holiday and did not mean to hurt anyone.

Police said a stray bullet went through a fence, then the wall of a home and into a bedroom where a child was watching TV.

The bullet grazed the boy, who was not seriously hurt.

James Sanchez-Hernandez pleaded guilty in March to hindering prosecution and attempted tampering with evidence in this case and was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
