Elderly couple killed after fire rips through Salem mobile home

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A fast-burning fire destroyed a mobile home in Salem Friday night, killing the couple living inside.

The Marion County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victims as Vernon Anderson, 82, and wife Joan Anderson, 73.

The exact causes of death are still pending, but investigators determined that both deaths were related to the fire.

The fire started just after 7 p.m. at the Arrowhead Mobile Home park in the 5400 block of Portland Road.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames shooting from the structure and called for a second alarm response.

They said that oxygen tanks inside the home may have helped fuel that fire, which made it difficult for crews to fight.

The heavy flames caused firefighters to move into a defensive attack, evacuating nearby homes and keeping the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.

Crews did notice a vehicle in the driveway, but the fire was too intense so they couldn't search for any occupants possibly trapped inside.

Fire investigators returned to the scene on Saturday and discovered the elderly couple deceased inside.

Officials said the home sustained major damage, making it difficult for investigators to try and determine the cause of the fire. However, they don't believe the fire was suspicious in nature.
