Police said a drunk driver crashed his car through the middle of a home in southeast Portland, narrowly missing the homeowner inside.
Greg Buckland said he was getting ready for bed at about 11 p.m. Friday when he heard a strange noise outside his home in the 6000 block of Southeast Flavel Drive.
"A car came flying through and landed in here," said Buckland as he showed FOX 12 where a car plowed through his living room wall. "It hit me and knocked me through that wall right there."
The car destroyed the living room, dining room and bedrooms before coming to a stop in Buckland's backyard. Buckland said police told him the car was going nearly 100 mph before the crash.
After the impact, Buckland said he spoke with the driver, who allegedly took off running.
"I said, ‘What in the world did you just do?' And he goes, ‘Well obviously I just drove my car though your house.'"
Police arrested 28-year-old James Anderson who is charged with DUII, criminal mischief and reckless driving.
Buckland said he lost nearly all of his belongings and the house may be a total loss. It also destroyed a Koi pond he built in the backyard. Buckland doesn't believe the fish will survive.
"That was kind of my pride and joy," he said. "We built it from scratch when we got the house."
Buckland was recovering from recent shoulder surgery and said he was reinjured in the crash. He said police told him he wouldn't be alive if he had been standing two feet in another direction.
"I'm just thankful I'm alive," he said. "I thank God for that. It could have been a lot worse. I'm thankful for the little things right now."
Buckland does have homeowner's insurance but said a claims adjuster had not been out to inspect the damage Saturday.
