A pit bull that lost its front legs is going back to California as the dog's former owners go to court on charges of animal cruelty.
London was rescued last year by the Vancouver nonprofit, Panda Paws Rescue, after the dog was dropped off at a humane society in Crescent City, CA with severely fractured legs.
Former owners Zachary Hinton and Sarah Anderson were eventually arrested.
According to the Del Norte District Attorney, who is prosecuting the case, police reports indicate an eyewitness saw the couple slam the puppy on the floor numerous times after he chewed a couch in March.
According to investigators, the suspects waited several months before bringing the dog to a shelter, which then contacted Panda Paws Rescue, an organization experienced in handling special needs animals.
A vet in Vancouver determined the dog needed both of his front legs amputated and Panda Paws Rescue founder Amanda Giese helped nurse him back to health.
In September, London was adopted to a new family in Portland. He gets around using a specially designed wheelchair from Moto Corsa in Portland.
Giese said over the weekend she was heading down to Crescent City, along with London and Dr. Brandon Sherman, for the trial of Hinton and Anderson set for Tuesday and Wednesday.
She said the goal is "to hopefully put his accusers in jail for the maximum sentence allowed for animal abuse, neglect and cruelty."
