Blind cat and parrot rescued from burning SE Portland home

Posted: Updated:

An 18-year-old parrot and a blind cat were rescued from a southeast Portland house fire Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called out to Southeast 84th Avenue near Liebe Street at 11 a.m. Smoke was coming from the eaves of the house and crews encountered heavy heat and smoke when they went inside.

Investigators said firefighters had a difficult time reaching the fire because of large amounts of debris in the home.

The conditions got worse before firefighters could get into the bedroom, where it's believed the fire started. Commanders had to order firefighters to leave the home for their own safety.

They fought the fire from the outside until it was knocked down enough to go back inside.

The fire damage was limited to the bedroom and the attic, but the home suffered smoke damage throughout.

No one was inside and the animals were reunited with the owners who arrived at the scene a short time later.

"He's the whole world to me," said Tina Ivey, with her parrot Henry on her arm.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious at this point.
