Man solicits drivers with sign: 'Need kidney donor'

BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A local man in desperate need of a new kidney isn't just waiting for his name to come up on the transplant list.

Instead, he's taking his cause to the streets and he's carrying a big sign.

Earl Martinez, 28, has been holding his sign in the Tanasbourne area for the last three days. His sign makes his case clear to passing drivers: He needs a kidney donor.

Martinez is on the Oregon Health & Science University transplant list, but he said it keeps getting longer and his chance to get a new kidney just got pushed back another six months.

Martinez has Alport's syndrome, which causes him blood pressure issues, feet swelling and the loss of hearing and vision.

He goes to dialysis three times a week for four to five hours each time.

Martinez has type O blood, which is very common, so there are plenty of others on the transplant list with that blood type as well.

He hasn't had any offers of a kidney yet from his sign, but he has gotten plenty of prayers and positive feedback.

"I see smiles and that's encouraging," Martinez said. "I want people to know that it's a good message that not everybody is trying to pan handle for money. There's people out there who honestly do need help from the community and it's OK to just reach out."

If you are interested in helping, contact Martinez at 503-858-8989 or pearl.martinez23@live.com.
