A man listed on the Salem Police Department's top 10 most wanted list for nearly a year was shot after a chase that ended in Keizer Wednesday morning.
Gabriel Diaz, 29, of Salem, had three warrants out for his arrest on sex abuse charges.
The chase began at 8:50 a.m. when Salem police attempted to stop a truck driven by Diaz at the intersection of Cordon Road Northeast and Carolina Avenue.
Diaz took off and police said he led them on a pursuit that lasted 14 minutes and covered 13 miles. Marion County deputies, Oregon State Police troopers and Keizer officers were also involved.
The chase went north on Cordon Road into Brooks and back down into Keizer. Investigators said the suspect managed to avoid spike strips placed in the road by police.
Officers were eventually able to use their cars to block the suspect near the intersection of Inland Shores Way and Lockhaven Drive.
Witnesses told police that when Diaz got out of his truck he had an object in his hand and was challenged by officers. When he failed to comply with their commands, Salem officer Bruce Fineran fired his gun, hitting Diaz.
Diaz was taken to Salem Hospital, but there is no update on his medical condition at this point. No officers were hurt.
Officer Fineran, a K9 team officer, is a 21-year veteran of the Salem Police Department. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, along with the other officers directly involved in the incident.
Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call Oregon State Police at 1-800-452-7888.
