PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Macy's employee who helped a woman escape from the shooting at the Clackamas Town Center was honored for his bravery.

Allen Fonseca is one of the winners of the 14th annual Newsmakers Award for Newsmaker of the Year.

Fonseca was helping Jocelyn Lay at the Lancome counter the day a gunman entered the mall and opened fire.

When the gunfire rang out, he pulled Lay behind the counter and guided her to safety.

He then went back into the mall to see if anyone else needed help.

Fonseca was presented with a medal and plaque during a ceremony last night.

He said he and Lay have since become friends.

"You hear stories of people saying they're going to unite and hang out afterwords but this has stayed true," Fonseca said.

"He's invited to Thanksgiving," Lay joked.

The Newsmakers Award is to honor heroes and heroines in our community and to celebrate journalistic excellence as expressed through the reporting of events that have a positive influence upon the way we live.

The event was founded by the Royal Rosarians in 1998.
