One person died in a crash on SR-14 at Lieser Road in Vancouver on Thursday morning.
The Chevy Avalanche veered off the road at around 5 a.m. Thursday and crashed down an embankment ahead of the morning rush hour, investigators said.
At one point during the crash, the SUV lost a tire. It landed in one of the eastbound lanes of the highway, investigators said. Another car passing by hit the tire, they added.
Mark Hutton, who witnessed the crash, told FOX 12 that after he hit the tire in the road, he pulled over on the side of the highway, flagged down another driver to call 911, then went over to check on the driver of the Chevy Avalanche.
"He was breathing, but was unconscious," Hutton said. "So, I just tried to comfort him. I don't know if he heard me or not but just wanted him to know somebody was there to try to help out."
The driver who died in the crash has not been identified. According to a Washington State Patrol spokesman, investigators haven't confirmed if the driver was a man or a woman.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash, but they believe alcohol might have been a factor, the spokesman said.
It did not appear as if the driver had been weaving in and out of his lane, Hutton said. The driver also didn't appear to be speeding, he added.
The right lane of SR-14 eastbound was closed for several hours. The lane is now back open.
