PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police arrested a man on Thursday for trying to steal a puppy from the Oregon Humane Society (OHS).

Brent Klausner, 36, faces attempted theft and criminal mischief charges.

He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail.

Detectives say Klausner attempted to walk out of the shelter with a puppy he'd removed from one of the cages on Jan. 14.

An employee told police that Klausner broke a lock securing the cage, grabbed a terrier mix named "Burkhead" and started to walk toward the counter with the puppy hidden under his coat, police said.

The worker confronted the suspect, who turned over the animal, before leaving the shelter.

Officers contacted Klausner a few blocks away and talked about the incident with him, but did not arrest him at that time.

Police then consulted with the District Attorney's Office and conducted further investigation.
