Longview food bank burglarized

LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

Burglars ransacked a Longview food bank, stealing food and creating a large mess for volunteers.

"The difficult part is, we would have given them anything they wanted," said John Gotshall, the president of the Longview St. Vincent de Paul board of directors.

Gotshall suspects more than one person was behind the burglary. He said they got into the food bank by breaking a window on a door, then reaching in and grabbing a handle.

Volunteers discovered the burglary when they arrived at the food bank around 7 a.m. Thursday.

Food was taken or tossed on the ground from shelves in the room where food boxes are distributed.

The burglars stole food from a meat freezer, costume jewelry from a display case and cleared out bins of soap, lotion and other personal care items.

They also ransacked an office, throwing dozens of files on the ground.

"They took one of our carts to do it and they made several trips. We can see that," said Gotshall. "They were just hiking stuff over the fence to get what they wanted."

Volunteers spent Thursday cleaning up the mess to get the food bank ready for Friday morning, when 200 people were expected to pick up food.

"Builds us, makes us stronger," said Gotshall. "We'll be a little smarter tomorrow than we were yesterday."

If you have information that could help the investigation into this burglary, call Longview Police.
