A southwest Portland man is facing DUII and assault charges after police say he drove into oncoming traffic on the ramp from I-205 to I-5 near Tualatin and caused a collision.
The driver, identified as Derek Thiem, age 35, is also facing charges of reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Oregon State Police received an initial call at 7:20 p.m. Saturday, that Thiem's 2002 Ford four-door car was spotted driving the wrong way on I-5 northbound near Tualatin. A second caller then reported a crash involving a wrong-way driver on the ramp from I-205 where it leads to the lanes of I-5 northbound.
Thiem's car collided with a 2003 Chevy SUV loaded with five passengers. None of the occupants of the SUV were transported to the hospital.
Thiem's airbags deployed and he was transported to Oregon Health Science University for treatment.
The freeway ramp from I-205 to I-5 northbound was closed for an hour for an investigation.
Court records show Thiem was convicted for DUII in Washington County in March 2012. He also pleaded no contest to having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle in Multnomah County last year.
