SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

An attempted home invasion robbery turned into a shooting Monday morning in Salem, Marion County Sheriff's deputies said.

Around 8 a.m., a 911 caller reported that two men were fighting with the victim in the backyard of a home in the 4000 block of Jade Street NE.

Deputies arrived within minutes of the call and found a man suffering from a serious gunshot wound.

Paramedics took the man, whose name has not been released, to Salem Hospital.

Deputies said the victim stays in a small guest cottage that is a separate building at the back of the property, which is near where the shooting took place.

Two armed, masked men accosted the victim at the cottage and demanded money, investigators told FOX 12.

A scuffle ensued and the victim was shot by one of the suspects during the confrontation, deputies said.

The first suspect is described as a Hispanic or white man, 20-30 years old, 6' tall with a thin build and a beard.

He was wearing a black, full-face mask stocking cap and a black jacket with a red Michael Jordan logo on it.

The second suspect is described as a Hispanic or white man, 5'10" tall with a stocky build and a beard.

He also wore a black stocking cap mask.

After the shooting, the attackers drove away in a smaller model bright red pickup with a black canopy.

The getaway truck had been parked in a neighboring apartment complex and was last seen headed westbound on Jade St NE, toward Lancaster Dr NE.

Detectives do not know yet if anything was taken during the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the shooting, the suspects or the suspect vehicle is urged to call the Marion County Sheriff's Office 24-hour number at 503-588-5032.
