PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Fire and Rescue came to the aid of two people who ended up stranded on an island in Johnson Creek.

Crews responded at around 5:40 Tuesday evening to an area near Southeast 112th and Bookside Drive and called in a swift-water rescue response.

Fire officials said Tony and Cheri Sue were unaware of the rising water and had no way off the island.

They told Fox 12 they waded to the island when water was low, and then called to for help when they realized they couldn't make it back.

Cheri Sue said afterward that they were "wondering if we were smart enough to call somebody to come get us or to try it ourselves, and I'm glad we called."

Tony Sue said he was "trying to make a decision on what to do, I mean I had my life to worry about and hers."

Crews used a raft, a rope system and rescue drivers to reach them.

They were able to bring them safely to shore just after 6:30 p.m.

Crews evaluated both Cheri and Tony Sue at the scene and they didn't need to go to a hospital.
