'American Idol' hopeful from Longview earns golden ticket

LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

An American Idol hopeful from the southwest Washington town of Longview has punched his ticket to Hollywood after a performance that caught the eye of judges at an audition in Louisiana.

Tyler Jacobson said it was a dream come true to sing in front of the panel of famous Idol judges, especially Mariah Carey.

"Mariah Carey, when she started to talk, my heart started racing quite a bit because any singer idolizes people like that," Tyler Jacobson said.

Tyler's mom, Julie Jacobson, said her son has always had big dreams and an uncanny talent to perform, despite growing up in a small town.

"You can ask him to sing for a couple of people and he gets nervous, but you put 1,000 people in front of him and he can go out there and sing," Julie Jacobson said.

Before this season of American Idol, Tyler Jacobson had already auditioned twice for the hit singing show, but he didn't earn the golden ticket either time. It seems the third time is the charm, however.

The singer, who has moved to Nashville to pursue his music career, performed at the Baton Rouge auditions in 2012. This time, the judges couldn't say no.

"All four gave me 'yes' to Hollywood so that was pretty cool," Tyler Jacobson said.

Now, Jacobson is headed to Hollywood, but he can't say much else. In fact, even his family is being kept in the dark.

No matter where the show takes him, Jacobson said he'll never forget his roots.

"It's crazy to see all these people that I've known my whole life just continue to support me in anything that I do, and it's kind of cool to keep in touch with those people and share music," he said. "It's a beautiful thing."

Jacobson created a Facebook page so you can follow along on his journey.

American Idol
continues Thursday night on FOX 12.
