The ice cracked, giving way under Timothy Toner and his friend Jordan. It happened so fast the boys didn't have a lot of time to think. Soon they were both in the water.
TV5's Liz Gelardi talked with Timothy, who is lucky to be alive after the scary experience.
Timothy said two boys were hanging out near Veterans Memorial Park when they tried to cross the river late Wednesday afternoon.
"We knew we were in trouble when we saw the ice actually starting to move under us, and then we looked down again and that's when we fell in," said Timothy Toner.
Jordan tried to pull him out of the ice, but he also fell in. Jordan eventually pulled himself out of the water and took off his wet shirt and used it to pull Timothy out.
The boys knew one of their friends was back on the shore, and they told him to call for help. Emergency crews responded and rescued the pair.
Timothy talked to TV5 because he wants to warn other kids about the dangers of playing on thin ice.
You can hear Timothy's entire story on Sunday's edition of TV5 News at 11, after the Super Bowl.
