THE DALLES, OR (KPTV) -

An 88-year-old woman who missed her exit on Interstate 84 made a U-turn and started driving the wrong way on the freeway Monday, state police said.

Troopers said Jocelyn Gay, from The Dalles, apparently thought she was on a two-way freeway when she made the U-turn before the Celilo interchange near The Dalles.

Other drives flashed their headlights at Gay's oncoming car before she crashed nearly head-on with a Dodge Caravan driven by 65-year-old Bekeah Darden.

Both vehicles were traveling about 65 mph at the time of the collision. The impact sent both the van and Gay's Toyota Prius crashing into the center median, with the van veering to the right and sideswiping a semitrailer.

The two vehicles came to rest about 500 feet apart, police said.

Gay and Darden suffered what police described as minor injuries. They were taken to Mid-Columbia Medical Center to be treated.

Police shut down eastbound lanes for about 90 minutes while they investigated the crash.

Whether or not there will be a criminal charge will be up to the Wasco County District Attorney's Office, which will review the police investigation once it's complete.
