SILVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

Emergency crews worked for two hours to remove a driver who crashed his truck into a utility pole Thursday morning.

Mark McKeller, from Salem, had been heading north on Cascade Highway NE at 55 mph when he suddenly stopped in the roadway, causing cars behind him to come to a sudden stop.

As soon as he stopped, he started driving again, deputies said. He crested a rise in the roadway, but failed to complete a right-hand turn as it came over the crest.

McKellar's 2002 Chevy Avalanche left the road, crashed into a high-voltage power pole and came to rest against a large tree.

Deputies said McKellar's truck was airborne when it hit the tree.

Paramedics from Silverton and Sublimity rushed to the scene and removed McKellar from the truck. A Life Flight helicopter took him to Salem Hospital, where his injuries were described as very serious.

Deputies said excessive speed was a factor in the crash, and that it was still dark with fog and mist in the area at the time.
