PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Fire crews think a cigarette started an early morning house fire in Northeast Portland.
It happened just before 6 a.m. Saturday at the home on Northeast 54th near Emerson.
All six people inside were able to get out of the house unharmed.
Fire investigators say the blaze caused more than $77,000 in damage to the home.
They said that the fire serves as a good reminder that cigarettes are the number one cause of fires and deaths from fires.
Forty-five percent of deaths from fires are caused by fire cigarette related incidents, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.
The second most cause is heating equipment malfunction at 8 percent.
Additionally, fires caused by cigarette smoking produce about 6,000 injuries a year.
