St. Helens police said one very important clue helped lead to the arrest of a pair of graffiti vandalism suspects.

They both still had orange spray paint on their hands.

Police discovered graffiti painted on homes, cars and businesses along Columbia Boulevard between Highway 30 and North Vernonia Road early Thursday morning.

Bright orange paint was even used on shrubbery.

Investigators said they were led to two transients who are known to frequent the Forest Park Apartments. By midday, officers located Joseph Gates, 36, and Vanessa Workman, 33.

Police said the pair still had orange paint on their hands and clothes.

They are both charged with criminal mischief. Workman also faces a probation violation charge.

Officers said their motivation is not clear, but Gates did say he was "being stupid," according to police.

Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to call police at 503-397-1521.
