PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Portland Public School superintendent Carole Smith changed her recommendation on closing Chief Joseph Elementary School.
Smith submitted a plan Feb. 1 to close the campus and merge the school with Ockely Green.
That plan was designed to help enrollment distribution for a cluster of North and Northeast Portland schools.
The proposal created an uproar in the North Portland community.
After a Monday night hearing, Smith changed the proposal to close the school after learning three school board members also opposed the closure.
The school district is still recommending changes for Chief Joseph school.
Those suggestions include operating Chief Joseph and Ockely Green as one neighborhood school with two campuses.
A final vote on possible changes is scheduled for Feb. 25.
